I think most people understand the dangers but that little man in their head says "I want. I want, I want," a bit of mind over matter, purely psychological.
Why do we have to keep up with the "Jones"? Kids see their friends with "Adidas trainers costing Â.£160 so they got to have a pair cos they are "cool" & " everybody's wearing them. I'd rather thet bought a pair that was comfortable & will fit the requirements of their need not what other people think of them.

I think that your why question is pretty simple to answer. Good Ol' American Style Capitalism is to blame. Their tool is of course advertising. We are constantly being bombarded with images suggesting we need more or better. Simple economics. If we all bought the shoes we needed, the shoe companies would be very comfortable. However, if we all buy those fancy Nike and Adidas, then the shoe companies become disgustingly rich.
Thanks for the input, Sp00k.
