Computer Help
I am thinking of buying a computer for the family. Any suggestions on a decent computer for under $1000? I'm not looking for a real fancy one, my kids will be using it too to play on (8, 5, and 2 years old).
I would love to advise but I'm afraid all the computers I know of are all English ...me being this side of the pond. Nothing wrong with the Limey computers apart from the cost on our side. I think they are much cheaper in America.

Re: Computer Help
Well... by "under $1000", do you mean that $999 is acceptable? If so, this is one of the better ones I'd recommend: Dell XPS 420. Or are you looking for something a bit cheaper?

If you get a Mac Mini, it can run Windows and the MAC OS X.
The kids can't crash the Mac side and the Windows is there as needed. They go for
$500-700 and then a 17 inch LCD monitor is less than $150. WARNING: the MAC OS X
can be addicting. It never does anything ugly and needs no spyware or virus upkeep.

I have a nice Dell here at school. I like it for what I use it for. Any Dell horror stories, or is it a pretty reliable machine? I am leaning towards buying one. Anyone????
Dell is what both companies I've worked for use. It's what I'm using right now. I've never had much trouble. The only reason my home laptop is not a Dell is 'cause the Compaq is cheaper. The Dell IS a better quality though.

Dell
I think our family owns about 5 Dells... Never a problem with anything. You can spend 9000$ on an elite gaming computer, or 499$ on a word processor.
Go dell... and PHONE IT IN!!!
Phone in your order, and I promise you, you can sucker something free out of them. My brother got a free printer, with my laptop I got a free backpack, with my desktop way back when they upgraded my speakers.
You'll get some guy in India, and he'll cut you a deal... always. Smooth talk, smooth talk, smooth talk. They want the money, you want free shit. It works every time
True... there may be better computer makers, but none are as easy to customize. Customizing a computer from scratch is complicated, and the ones pre-made in stores probably have as many alleged horror stories as Dell. But to be honest, I've never heard one about Dell *shrugs* They are good quality.
When buying your Dell, make suuuure you watch for a few weeks. There's a new deal every week, something free, something half off. Just keep an eye on their site. I usually know exactly what I want by using their easy-to-use website to chose a model, and add the features you like. Then give them a call They have free shipping fairly frequently, if not always, too
If the computer for the kids, try and get a graphics card from Nvidia or ATI. The Intel Graphics card is awful... it wont play a lot of games, or at most they'll look shitty. An upgraded graphics card will run you about 50$ (more for a great one obviously, but if it's Nvidia or ATI you're good). Upgrading your sound card is nice too... that shouldn't be more than 30$.
The computer DC is talking about is pretty good, but this week it's about 1100$ to start. The model one lower (believe it's still the 9200c) is cheaper, stars around 900$ and then you can upgrade a few components. For gaming, RAM is very important, but looking at computers these days, not many come with poor ram
And I agree with Noods... go XP if you can. Not all Dell models still offer it.
If you've already got a monitor, you'll save money there too (200$-ish for the standard monitors the mid-range desktops come with)... but the new monitors that dell sends out these days are preeetty fine Then again, you use an existing monitor, or go find a non-flat panel for 50$ (that could get you a huuuge old-school, but still nice monitor) and then kick up your desktop a little more Those old chunky screens are still great for games... and by old I mean 2 years ago, when they still sold the non flat-panel kind. These flat panel ones have refresh rate, which makes games look like shiiit if it's not a decent monitor.
