Default DVD backup help

I'm trying to backup my personal dvd collection and I'd like to know how to make an .avi file so I can just put it on my hard drive and be done with the hard copy dvds (put them in storage, or whatever) I just want to be able to take my DVD collection with me, without all the discs. I currently use DVDClone but that gives me different files, I just want the movie, that's it. Also I have a few TV series on dvd too, and I'd like to know how to burn them the same way, but with split scenes (each scene has it's own file, instead of one long file with 3 or 4 episodes)

I normally wouldn't bother people with this, I'd try to find it myself, but I don't even know where to start, so any help would be appreciated.

PS. I'm not asking to do aything illegal am I? These are the DVDs I own, I bought them, I just want a back up electronic copy.

You are allowed to back up your own collection.

On windows I use DVDfab 5.0.3.0 to rip the disc. It allows for separate chapter ripping.

Also CloneDVD Mobile will rip and convert to AVI on the fly.

I sent you a link via PM for a great trick.

I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so............
