For me it is off the cuff, but I do look for cues that can help establish a certain commonality.

I think the beauty of any kind of input is it inevitably will turn round to a spin-off to another topic & sooner or later will hit a nerve or something that interests other people to give their input leading to a bond of sorts. Ultimately bringing you closer to someone with the same interests.

A bit like our threads here.

Sometimes it goes off topic which is fine as long as we can get it back on track without totally killing it.

It doesn't matter who you are or where you are its good to communicate but obviously its difficult to stay on topic 24/7...you have to take a new directon to break the monotone.

i usually find that a compliment is the best conversation starter there is, it opens the person up to welcoming conversation, or if they are the type who dont take compliments well, then they will generally question your remark, and there is the start of the conversation in either case...

but the compliment "nice legs" generally only works on women (in case you wanted to know)
