I used to live about 200 yds away from Sting. Knew him when he was a teacher in Newcastle. Spoke to him a few times before he made it big & watched him practice in the local clubs at our area. A very nice fellow & quite an extraordinary voice as well as being extremely polite. He always had the time to talk whenver you approached him
Mind you that was a long long time ago 20 years or more so maybe the star status has changed him.

Very cool! I love the Police and my favorite song was "Don't Stand So Close to Me"--inspired by his days as a teacher, I presume from the video.

I remember that one. He does have an amazing voice it is so distinctive. I liked "King of Pain" very much too. A lot of the new "pop" all sounds the same.

Everyone has different tastes. So you got no claim to any fame then?
|
I know my parents probably scratched there heads at some of the stuff I listened to...life with teenagers
Claim to fame? Not really..I've met a couple of people, but I wouldn't say I know them. More they know my family. My Aunt and Uncle do alot with the Kyle Petty Charity ride across America, so I've met a few of the Nascar drivers.
Rick Flair used to go to my church--but that is "professional wrestlin'" so I don't know if you even know who that is
Nothing near as good as Sting!

Ric Flair? Hell yeh. 16 time world champion, watched wrestling all my life. Strictly for the moves not the hype or stories.

Oh my God--it has invaded across the pond too!!! I got dragged to ever TV taping back in the late 70's early 80's and I don't know how many big matches. My dad loved it. (I pick on him and tell him that it is just "soap operas for men" )
I just can't get over you know about wrestling.
Flair is pretty cool...though the only time he ever really came to church was on Easter Sunday. But he was always real quiet (if you can imagine that).
I know a few other wrestlers--they used to all hang out at the motorcycle shop where I worked. I live real close to what was their home base (Charlotte, NC).
Jimmy Garvin was a nut--and a HUGE flirt with all the women.
Magnum TA (real name Terry Allen) was a pretty nice guy, he had a bad car wreck and was out of it by the 90's. I really like his wife (they are divorced know, but we are still friends.)
Ivan and Nikita Koloff, (no Russian accent in person)
Sold many a leather jacket, chain belt, sunglasses and such to that crowd
They were all amazing athletes...and great showmen.

Re: Your Claim To Fame
i was cooking in a roadhouse a few years back, when Peter Garret, a one time rock star here in Oz in the band Midnight Oil, and then Greenie Politician, came in for a bite on his way to Sydney for a rally of some sort...
anyhoo... i noticed that he got out of his car, a family sized four-door sedan, and he was travelling alone!!!
so my bro, who was there also and was a fan, wanted his autograph, but was too timid to ask, got me to do it. No probs... got the autograph, gave it to me bro, and then proceeded to tell him what i thought of him being the big greenie tree hugger that was driving a big car on his own to a big city... Lame i know, but still, i got a kick out of it, and a tip!!!
cheap bugger, left me 20c the scoundrel...

I once got on stage in front of about 2000, mostly old blue hairs, at a play in L.A., grabbed my crotch to riotus laughter. And Steven Speilberg and his family were in the audience. Never did get a call back, but my family said he laughed heartily at my bafoonery.

When I went to the American School in London(before I went to TASIS in Thorpe) which is in St John's Wood The Police came and played for the school. It was Stewart Copeland's tribute to the school. It was in 1978 and Roxeanne had already been realeased once. It bombed, then it was released again in the UK and started the road to fame for The Police. Never got to talk to any of them. They left in a hurry.
Sting is an amazing talent.
On a flight to Shannon, Ireland I sat next to BB King's guitar(Lucille) and its chaperone and on the way back the lead singer from Thin Lizzy(Phil Lynott, RIP) was across the aisle. I was just a kid then.
Our next door neighbor in Weybridge, Surrey was Cliff Richards. He treated everyone in the area very nicely. A real class act.
