They have insanly strict rules in BC, the province of Canada I'm in

You get your learners permit at age 16, hafta drive with only 1 person, and they must have a full license and be over 25 years of age. Also, they have to have a red L that ICBC (our only car insurance company) gives out, clearly displayed on the car while driving. With the L, you can only drive from 6am to 12pm, and can not have a single drop of alcohol in your blood stream

You keep this for an entire year, or 9 months if you take driving lessons. To get this off, you take a half hour drivers test.

If you pass, (most fail first try), you get your N, or New drivers license. Now you hafta have a green N on the back of your car. You can drive alone, but may only have 1 passenger unless there is someone over 25 in the car. Again, no drinking AT ALL, and if you get only a few points, they reset the count on how long you've had the N, or even take it away and make you take the driving test again

Now get this...you have to keep the N for 2 years. This means that at best, you'll have a full license 3 months before your 19th birthday. To loose the N, you have to take an even harder, longer and more expensive test. So, before you have a full permit, you take a written test and 2 driving tests.

Only being able to drive 1 person SUCK big time, and the rule gets broken A LOT. For responcible teens it's too much, and a lot of people believe so; on the other hand I'm sure it's saved TONS of lives. They're even talking about extending the length of the L and N periods.

sometimes you have to take extreme measures, lives lost on the road are entirely too common, and almost always avoidable and due to irresponsiblity on one or both sides!! I"ve lost 2 family members due to driver irresponsibility, my father was hit by a drunk driver, and my brother killed himself and a friend driving drunk, so I feel that there should be stiff penalties for breaking the very very lenient driving laws here in the states.

That is a very extreme rule tho I think its more than effective. e got tough rules here too but not as tough as that. Its well know fact that teenagers are the bigggest cause of accidents on the road. Insurance is astonomical for 18 - 25 groups here.

They tried stiff penalties, but too many people have the 'it'll never happen to me' theory going.

Making the drivers license thougher to get should hopefully put a better generation of drivers on the road...I have a lot of older friends who missed this insane program who do drink and drive. But of all my friends my age, I only know one who is stupid enough to drink and drive...they pounded it into our heads starting from a VERY young age how bad an idea it is. I remeber one speaker they brought to us to talk about how fucked up her life was because her drinking and driving got her best friend and cousin killed. Scared pretty well everyone there enough to just call a feckin cab.

I wouldn't say I have ever been a better driver than my parent's. Well maybe my dad since he never seems to indicate, but my point is every time I go driving I get cut up, have people cutting off roundabouts driving out from side roads at me etc. 99% of the time these people are over the age of 25. With age comes experience, but also comes complacency. When I passed I was nervous when driving and so much more aware. Now I would say my reaction times are slightly longer because I am more relaxed.

I got my DL in England, it was not as tough as Canada, but a heck of a lot better than the way kids are taught in the US. I had a mandatory red L also. To make it worse here immigrants do not have to speak English to get a license and in most states all the road signs are in English and there is not much use of the international road symbols that we see all over Europe and Asia.
