Well my cousin has add most of his life.. he's just about 20 now... either way he did take ritalin and was quite liiike kinda hyper say but that didnt really mean it was a bad thing, it was just the way he was, nobody really thought much differently of him or anything, plus within last 5 years, approximately, I find he's a lot more relaxed and you wouldnt really say he has or had ADD. Sooo it might not be as bad as you think Demur, all the same I'm sorry you have had a bad string of luck there But there's always a positive way to look at things, things could always be worse, and usually arent as bad as we first tend to think. Anywho, I just like to perk people up if I can. You'll be alright!

Demur, if she actually needs the medication, Ritalin isn't bad. My little brother is ADHD, and was on the medication for... two and a half years, I believe? Definitely nothing wrong with it, and like I say, if your little girl actually needs it (not just been pawned on it, etc.), then it can do wonders in helping her learn and interact with others.
It will probably be a little bit of a trial at first until they get the type/dosage correct, but once they do, everything should turn around nicely! But do make sure that they monitor her regularly! Just putting the child on the medicine and then just letting them go is not wise, because so many little factors affect how she will react and also her health. If they monitor her on a regular basis (I believe for my brother he had a doctor's appointment once a month), then any adverse effects should be avoided.

Dood you are such a dork sometimes, but in that totally great way!!
And, Demur, my thoughts are still with you and your family. I tend to agree with Alpha here. I think we (and our children) all have problems and when they turn out to be ones that are fairly easy to treat, then it is a bit of blessing.

you better double check on the drug. new research is showing that drugs to prevent ADD maybe be causeing more problems than actaully helping. course that seem to be the way with everything.
there are other ways to "treat" the problem. It is not the only solution

I tend to not stick my nose in these things and I wouldn't try to impose my opinions on the matter on you but .. Demur there are much better drugs out there than Ritalin , if any drug is needed at all .. I don't know how doctors are there but here they are so quick to diagnose ADD or ADHD and put a kid on drugs and some really don't need them ... I would suggest you research all your options before you decide to let your daughter be put on any drug . By no means am I suggesting you not listen to your doctor .. all Im saying is no one knows your child as well as you do so trust yourself to judge what is right for her and you'll both be ok

Unfortunately that's part of the problem, Boss.
I've been down every other possible alternate avenue with her to no avail.
Also, in fairness to her specialist this has not been a rash decision. She was diagnosed with ADD & Dyspraxia a few years ago. Recently, she has also been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome which is a mild form of Autism.
Ritalin hasn't ever at any point been pushed on me (Maybe things are handled differently over here in Ireland and the UK compared to the States) and it's taken aproximately 5 years for her pediatrician to suggest it.
As she gets older its becoming increasingly apparent how bad her condition really is. When she was younger I could put her behaviour down to "just being a kid".
Now she's almost 10 years old and is about at the mental age of a child aged 6 I'd say.
Her sister who's 18 months younger than her is miles ahead of her and it kills me to see it. Literally everyday is an uphill struggle for her. She wets herself at least 3 or 4 times a day because she gets engrossed in something and doesn't notice she needs to pee until its too late. This happens in school too and now that shes older her peers are teasing her, laughing at her etc. She's miserable in that environment.
At home, I have to virtually watch her every move and keep reminding her to do things, or repeat myself to her cause she can't absorb all the informnation I'm giving her. Simple things like "go into the kitchen and bring me the salt, but don't forget to close the door". She might hear me say "close the door" or "go to the kitchen" or maybe even "bring me the salt" but she won't hear all 3 commands together.
Where money is concerned she doesn't have a clue. This REALLY worries me because if she can't grasp even the basic understanding that 10 pennies make 10 pence, how is she gonna cope with the world? I took her & her sister to a cafe recently and I bought hot chocolate. When we were sat at the table she said she would love a fudge brownie, so I sent her up to the till with a Â.£5 note to buy herself one and also buy one for her sister. She got them, handed the guy behind the counter the Â.£5 and walked off without waiting for her change. She has absolutely no concept of money whatsoever. Like I say, it troubles me greatly.
I can't just stand by and watch this happen so after much deliberation, I have decided to give Ritalin a chance - just a trial run - and see how it goes. I have to do something. Heaven knows I've tried everything else and as a lone parent believe me it hasn't been easy.
Anyway, thank u all SO MUCH for all your opinions, views and support. I really appreciate it. U guys keep me sane in a mad mad world.
xxxxxx
