Where I can get a decent camera (any suggestions, and not too pricey) I'll pop back to my parents place cause there's one down the bottom of the road and another not even a mile away in he next village (and a nice old church)

To be honest Sparky if you're just starting out I'd suggest a compact digital for everyday use until you get to know different techniques. Also its not so hard on your pocket.
As for which Brand well I'mm a bit biased in the fuji and canon direction tho I've just bought a 5 million mega pixel Samsung Digimax S500 for my stepdaughters 18th birthday (yesterday ....party tonight)and I'm very impressed with it.

Seen them from £54 (used on Amazon) http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...7-21/ref=nosim

Mind you there are cheaper compact ones out there so really its individual choice. You can always upgrade later. Prices are dropping all the time and technology much better.

If you can try to find a camera with a separate viewfinder other than the LCD screen.

5 or 6mp is more than ample...hell I still use my 1.5mp and pictures are fine. ( the more mp just means you can explode the picture to a larger size before it distorts. 5 mp will still print you out a A4 size pic ....just how big do you want?

Optical zoom go for at least 3X upwards, the more technical and more features will increase the price so you have to find the balance of what you can afford.

First of all... this would be a VERY good thread for the other forum Sparky!

Second, I feel even more strongly that people worry too much about MP. Some of my best photos were taken at 2MP, my 4MP are pretty good, just larger, and now I am using 6MP, and they are great again I think. Of course, the 2MP and the 6MP are both Canon.

And Zoom is nice. Just remember digital zoom means nothing. Basically you are just cropping the pic while looking through the lense and blowing it up. You can always do that later with your software. I have digital Zoom turned off on my camera in fact.

And a seperate viewfinder... definitely. In fact, I wish my viewfinder was not digital but they all seem to be now. This new camera's is fast though, so it works fine.

Basically you get what you pay for, but Sp00k is right. You can do a lot with a Compact Digital.

I don't even know what mine is considered - it ain't compact, but its not and SLR....

Now... go post this over on www.fotofanatix.com !!!

All good advice here. Two factors to consider are lens quality and sensor size/quality.
Those two factors are much more important than the pixels in order to get real quality
of color and detail wihout a lot of noise in low light conditions.

I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so............
