Default Anise Tea

Anise Tea
(Pimpinella anisumm)
(c) Wystira's Tea BOS

One of the oldest spices known to man. A native of Egypt, anise, is part of the Umbelliferae family, which includes cumin, fennel, caraway and dill. Long used for its medicinal properties, it has been used to flavor foods and to ease digestion. As both an expectorant and an antispasmodic, anise tea is effective in treating bronchial ailments, coughs with mucus and respiratory congestion. Due to its mild-stimulating effect, anise is also taken by nursing mothers to increase lactation. Also, it’s a very good herb to use to kill head lice.
Tea Preparation: Crush the aniseeds using a rolling pin or mortar and pestle just before brewing. This breaks the seed casings and allows more of the spice’s components to get into the tea infusion. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 t. of the crushed aniseed and steep for 10 min. Cover the coup with a lid to help the essential oils condense and drip back into the cup so they don’t evaporate.
Therapeutic Effect: The main component in anise essential is transanethol, which thins bronchial mucus, soothes the intestinal trace and eases cramps and gas. In addition, protein, fatty oils, sugar and coumarin have an antispasmodic effect. Anise also has antimicrobial agents, which kill head lice. CAUTION: Anise tea must not be taken by anyone allergic to herbs in the parsley family.
Anise for Children: Anise tea is an excellent remedy for children’s coughs, nausea and indigestion because it is reliable and well tolerated, and it tastes good too. Honey can be added to make it taste even better. (For those under 6, reduce the dose by half.)
Essential Oils Need To Ripen: As with most tea herbs that contain essential oils as their principal constituents, anise must be dried thoroughly before use. The enzymes become activated during the drying process and ripen the essential oil, making it much more effective than the oil of fresh seeds.
Anise is an effective remedy for bad breath. Chew a small amount of lightly roasted aniseeds after a meal - you’ll have both a breath sweetener and a digestive.
For Flatulence: Anise tea is a quick, dependable way to ease flatulence. It also stimulates the appetite and promotes the digestion of fatty foods. Drink up to 4 cups per day as needed, preferably unsweetened.

For Indigestion and Nausea: To stimulate the appetite, strengthen a sensitive stomach, treat colic or an upset stomach and help alleviate nausea, drink about 1 cup of unsweetened anise tea before or after a main meal.

For Coughs & Bronchitis: To relieve coughs and bronchitis, drink 3-4 cups of tea each day. Sweeten with honey, if you want. Dried anise has a strong expectorant effect on mucus that congests bronchial passages, making the mucus easier to expel and clears out the respiratory tract. Anise tea relaxes the respiratory passages, reducing the urge to cough.

For the Uterus: To stimulate a delayed period that could NOT be due to pregnancy, drink 1 cup of unsweetened anise tea 3 times daily. The tea will relieve the cramps associated with a late period. Pregnant women should avoid the tea, although nursing mothers can benefit from it.

For Flatulence:
1 oz. aniseed
1 oz coriander seed
1 oz caraway seed
1 oz fennel seed
Prepare this tea (Which is called "Four Winds Tea" in Europe) because it relieves gas, eases painful intestinal cramps, bloating and flatulence. This tea is excellent for children.

For Indigestion & Nausea:
1 ½ oz aniseed
1 oz peppermint leaves
¾ oz lemon-balm leaves
1/3 oz valerian root
Make this tea blend to ease indigestion and nausea. Aniseed is an antispasmodic, peppermint relieves cramps, lemon balm has a soothing effect and valerian root alleviates spasms.

For Bronchial Congestion:
1 ½ oz aniseed
1 oz calendula flowers
¾ oz marsh-mallow root
1/3 oz licorice root
Prepare this healing tea mix to relax your irritated bronchial passages and soothe them with a protective coating. The tea’s high mucilage content also thins mucus, thus the expectoration.

Kanuka e.o. is used for whooping cough, chicken pox, cold sores, ring worm, oily skin, athlete's foot, acne, insect bites, flu, colds, miagrains, cuts, bruises, itching, candida, and urethitis. It also promotes sleep and calmness, muscle pain, swelling, bruises, sprains, strains and sports injuries, and pain reduction, eczema, chapped skin, cracked nipples, burns, and lice.

Kanuka e.o. is steam distilled from the leaves and stems of the plant.

There have been no tests for toxicity on the kanuka e.o. But, like other e.o.'s please do not use undiluted on the skin. Use this with a good carrier oil before applying to your skin.

Lice B Gone
2 T. shampoo
4 drops kanuka e.o.
7 drops thyme e.o.
10 capsules of paw-paw cell - reg (can be purchased at most health food stores)
Mix all together (will feel gritty, but will work). Rub into dry hair (if you have long hair, I'd suggest increasing the shampoo to at least 3 T and one drop of each e.o. to thoroughly cover your hair.) Place a shower cap on your head and wait about an hour (1 hour + 15 mins for long hair). Rinse your hair and scalp thoroughly. Towel dry your hair. Now use a "nit" comb and comb through your hair removing lice and nits. Repeat in one week and then repeat again one week after that. You should have 3 treatments.

Steam Inhallation for colds, etc
2 drops kanuka e.o
bowl of steaming, hot water
Clean bath towel
Place the e.o. in bowl of steaming, hot water. Drape the towel over your head, lean your head over the bowl of steaming water and drape the towel over it also, forming a "tent." Inhale the vapors that are rising from the bowl to help you breathe.

Relaxing Bath To Soothe Sore Muscles
Bath full of very warm water
3-5 drops of kanuka e.o.
Fill your tub with very warm water. Add the e.o. and then get in and relax to ease aching, sore muscles.

Default Agrimony Tea

Agrimony Tea (Agrimonia eupatoria)
(c) Wystira's Tea BOS

Agrimony is an herb with potent healing powers. Used for stomachaches, liver ailments and edema (dropsy). Over time, Agrimony’s use has grown because of the components found in its flowering tops. Studies indicate that the herb is rich in tannins, which help tighten or constrict tissue and reduce bleeding. This may account for agrimony tea’s widespread use to treat such conditions as inflamed gums, sore throats, gallstones and diarrhea. The tea can also be applied topically to alleviate conjunctivitis, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, surface wounds and other minor irritations. Recent research has found that agrimony shows some promise in countering high blood sugar, although further study is necessary.
Tea Preparation:
Agrimony tea is quite tasty despite its generous amounts of bitter components such as bitters and tannins. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1-2 t. of the dried herb. Steep for 10 min., strain. Drink 1 cup 2-3 times per day between meals. To use agrimony tea for external ailments, make a more potent tea, with 3 t. of agrimony per cup of water.
Therapeutic Effect: Agrimony’s components may be few in number, but each one packs quite a medicinal punch. Its tannins help to heal skin wounds and alleviate diarrhea. The flavonoids provide the herb’s powerful anti-inflammatory action. Agrimony is only used short term - three to seven days. Avoid the herb during pregnancy or if you have kidney or liver problems.

For Conjunctivitis (pinkeye): Pinkeye is an inflammation of the sensitive mucous membranes that line the eyelid. As an anti-inflammatory, agrimony is a natural home remedy that helps to reduce both the swelling and irritation associated with pinkeye. Using a sterile container, blend ½ ounce each of fennel seeds and dried agrimony, and pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 t. of the mixture. Steep for 15 min., strain, using a coffee filter to catch the fine particles. Dip a cotton ball into the tea and apply it to the affected eye several times per day.
For Skin Wounds: Both astringent and anti-inflammatory, agrimony is said to promote the healing of minor scrapes and swelling, especially those wounds that are slow to heal. Make the tea and let cool. Soak a clean, sterile cotton cloth in the tea and apply to the affected area.

For Sore Throats and Gum Inflammation: Combining the anti-inflammatory agrimony with the strongly antiseptic sage in a tea blend will make an effective gargle for inflamed gums or a sore throat. Using equal parts of agrimony and sage, pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 t of the herb mix and steep for 10 min., strain. Once cooled, use as a gargle throughout the day for relief of symptoms.

For Hemorrhoids: Agrimony’s healing properties can be of use in relieving painful hemorrhoids. Pour 1 qt of water over 2 handful of the dried herb. Cover and steep 20 min.; strain. Into a sitz bath filled with warm water. Soak for about 20 - 30 min. Or, you can soak a clean cotton cloth in the tea and apply it directly onto the skin.
For Diarrhea: Agrimony is a traditional remedy for diarrhea; its astringency helps dry and tighten the bowel lining. Pour 1 ½ cups of boiling water over 2 heaping t. of the dried herb. Steep for 15 min.; strain. Drink up to 3 cups a day for no longer than 3 days, as it can impair food absorption.
For Chronic Gallstones:
1 oz. dried agrimony
1 oz. fennel seeds
1 oz. dried dandelion leaves or dried dandelion root
Make the tea. If you have a history of gallstones, this tea blend can act as a preventative measure. It both cleanses and stimulates the liver and the gallbladder. Drink 1 - 2 cups a day for 5 days; then take 2 days off.

For Indigestion:
1 oz. dried agrimony
¾ oz. calendula flowers
¾ oz. dried spearmint
½ oz. dried licorice root
Make the tea. The mildly bitter effects of this blend are thought to be effective in preventing and treating indigestion. Drink 6 oz. at least 30 min. before meals.

For High Blood Sugar:
1 ½ oz. dried agrimony
¾ oz. blueberry leaves
½ oz. dried centaury
Make the tea. Blueberry and agrimony are thought to lower blood sugar, and centaury offers digestive support. Drink 1 - 2 cups a day for 5 days, then take 2 days off.

Immortelle (Helichrysum) Essential Oil

Immortelle essentail oil has a medium to strong fresh, earthy scent. Its obtained by the steam distillation method. Its a pale yellow color and has a very thin consistancy. Also it is one of the most ancient herbs/oils.

It uses are: skin wounds, boils, burns, cuts, eczema, irritated skin, abscesses, acne, and dermatitis. It is said to help regenerate skin tissue (more than Lavender) and improve cirrculation, and a great Rheumatioid arthritis reliever.

Its also a good anti-inflammatory (more so than German Chamomile), anti-viral, and anti-fungal....so it would be a good one to keep on hand for those cuts, etc. that you get around the house. It is said to "fade" bruises almost overnight too.

Its also "supporting and comforting" for your mood. It can help with unresolved feelings and emotions that have been buried for a long time and helps to restore deep buried memories of the past.

It is said to also reduce scarring and is a great pain reducer.

Tobacco Essential Oil
(c) Wystira Moonsinger

Yes, that's right...tobacco essential oil. Bet'cha never thought there'd be an essential oil made from tobacco, did ya? Well, there is. I've never used it myself, so I did some research and here's what I found....

It has a deep, rich, dark brown color and has a warm, earthy tobacco-like scent. It's made from the tobacco leaf and is usually used for men. Only a couple of drops is used.

Tobacco is a member of the Nightshade family and there are about 100 species. The oil is extracted by the distillation method. The oil is highly volatile, so be careful when using it.

It is said that you can use a "tobacco tea" to kill lice and gnats. Here's the recipe:

Tobacco Tea for Lice or Gnats
By Mateo Rutherford
Buy a cigar or some rolling tobacco and boil the hell out of it in a liter or so of water. When cool shlop it on your hair and cover your hair with a plastic shower cap or something like that for 20 minutes then shampoo. One application should be enough, but I would often do a follow up about three or four days after the first application.

And from: Mach T. Fucada:
However, keep in mind that nicotine that is extracted from the tobacco is also toxic to humans (people don't get too much of it when the smoke it because it burns up). It should be used with care if there are cuts on the scalp which may increase the rate that it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

I know that there is more information out there, but don't want to take all day checkin it out. So, if you're interested in using tobacco e.o., look on the net. There's lots to see

Carrot Seed Essential Oil
(c) Wystira Moonsinger

Bet'cha never thought of carrot seed for an essential oil, did ya? Well, its a great essential oil. It has a medium to strong scent that lingers and it does smell kind of like carrots. Its good for toxin build-up, eczema, water retention, digestion, is useful in stimulating the uterus, and is good for those with mature skin. (like me...lol) And yes, it also helps to improve eyesight.

Carrots are not only orange, but come in yellow, white, dark-red and purple (in the Asian varieties).
The essential oil made from carrot seeds is an excellent body purifier. It boosts the liver and has a positive effect on the digestive system and bowels.
It assists in the formation of red blood corpuscles (cells) and has a strengthening effect on the skin.
It also helps to reduce age spots and gives the skin a more youthful complexion, due to its formative action on epidermal cells.
The essential oil should not be confused with a macerated oil made by infusing carrots into a base oil - and although this macerated oil is helpful for a variety of things, it does NOT have the therapeutic properties of the essential oil.
Also used successfully on ulcers, eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo and boils.
It has carminative, diuretic, emmenagogue, stimulant, and tonic properties.
CAUTION: Carrot seed oil should not be used excessively during pregnancy. Also, make sure you mix it with a good carrier oil before using on your skin.

Default Treating a Cold

Source: Mind Body Spirit
Runny noses, congested coughs and sweating cause the body to loose fluids,
leaving you dehydrated and thirsty. The obvious reaction is to get a hot
drink. Most hot drinks however contain caffeine which is a dehydrant, which
only makes the problem worse.
Make sure that it's plenty of water and juices drunk. Also, most herbal
teas are caffeine-free and can allow for a soothing hot drink with out any
further dehydrating effects.
Boost the Immune System by:
* Drinking more often and keeping the body hydrated, especially during a
fever.
* Increasing the vitamin intake.
* Getting Plenty of Rest - studies have shown that deep sleep increases the
immune functions. Skipping sleep will prolong a cold or lead up to one over
a period of time.
Cold Busting Herbs
Citrus Fruits - This includes lemons, grapefruit and oranges all high in
Vitamin C to help boost the immune system. The three fruits mentioned all have
antiseptic properties and can help lift moods. Orange can help with
bringing down temperatures. Grapefruit helps to stimulate the lymphatic system and
fight fevers. Lemon is a cleanser and purifier. Heat essential oils in a
vaporizer or eat as fresh fruit for the healing properties.
Echinacea - strengthens the immune system and can shorten the length of a
cold or flu. Drink a cup of echinacea tea every day from the start of winter
as a preventative measure.
Eucalyptus - As an oil, eucalyptus works on the respiratory tract, helping
to soothe inflammation and clear the head and sinuses. A few drops on a
handkerchief inhaled at intervals will aid in relieving nasal congestion.
Garlic - Either as clove, powder or in oil form, garlic has antibacterial
properties that help the immune system to fight infection. An effective
remedy for chest infections. Try to include garlic in your diet or take a fresh
clove two to three times a day with meals.
Ginger - Available in root or as essential oil, ginger has antiseptic,
stimulator and expectorant properties. Dilute the essential oil for a muscle
rubber. Ginger can also be used as a tea or added to foods.
Honey - Aids in soothing sore throats and coughs. Gives relief from
headaches and helps promote relaxation. Use honey instead of sugar to sweeten
herbal drinks.
Rosemary - Available as an essential oil or as a dried or fresh herb,
rosemary eases headaches and sore throats and can also raise spirits. Gargle with
a diluted syrup to ease a sore throat. Alternately, use to treat an aching
head, drink half a cup of rosemary tea every three hours.
Sage - Has chest clearing properties useful for treating head colds and
restoring the appetite. Drink in an herbal tea throughout the day.
Thyme - Available as either fresh or dried herb or as an essential oil.
Thyme fights infections and relieves low spirits and exhaustion, fortifying the
immune system. Drink a half cup of tea or take a half tbsp of syrup, three
times a day.
Pregnant women should avoid using sage and thyme.
Cough Syrup Recipe
1) Pour half a pint of boiling water into a jug containing a sliced lemon
and one tbsp organic honey.
2) Choose then to add any cold busting herb -
sage - chopped fresh sage
ginger - grated fresh ginger
thyme - spoonful of chopped fresh thyme
3) Cool, strain and take a half tsp three times a day.

Default Cold Remedies

Remedy One
Half ounce of fresh Ginger
Half a stick of Cinnamon;
Honey
Boil the above ingredients for about 8 minutes, and ingest while still very
warm.
This will cause you to get rid of that nasty winter cold that you may
contract.
Remedy Two
This remedy works extremely well for the flu, as well as colds:
Half an inch fresh Gingerroot, grated
A clove of garlic (two or more, if you can stand it), minced
1/8 tsp cayenne powder
Juice of half a lemon
1 cup boiling water
Honey
Pour boiling water over the other ingredients and let it stand for 20
minutes, or until cool enough to chug down. Remember that it's a medicine and is
not meant to be sipped!
Remedy Three
Source: Ytta
Make a mixture of Wintergreen, Mullein, and Ephedra for colds. Wintergreen
for headache aches and pains, Mullein for coughs, and Ephedra for coughs and
sore throat. Mix 2 parts Wintergreen and Mullein with one part Ephedra in a
jar. Then pour boiling water over one teaspoon and steep for 5 min., strain
and drink. Easy if you keep a jar made up in advance!
Why not make it something more potent, add some elderberry syrup that you
can make up yourself. Harvest fresh berries and cook them well and add sugar to
make a good syrup. You can add some rum or vodka for preservative for shelf
life after it cools. Then mix this in with your decoction when needed. To
kick it up more, put some local honey in, fresh lemon juice and nettles. Skip
the echinacia all together. It tastes nasty and doesn't do any good without
golden seal anyway.
For the Cold & Miseries
Source: Gaelan
(1) Hot tea, any flavor you like but I like hot spice tea for the winter
months:
Hot Spice tea-instant mix like Mother used to make:
Tang, (Warning, Tang makes you fart which is why NASA switched to Wyler's
early in the space program after the astronauts in their cramped capsules/space
suits found that opening the windows was not an option.)
Instant tea:
Powdered Cinnamon
Powdered Cloves
Powdered Allspice
Mix tea & Tang in equal parts or 3/4 Tang to 1/4 tea--my preference. Add the
spices to your taste. You can add sugar or sweeten the tea later. A jar of
this stores well for several weeks if it is kept air tight.
(2) Juice of a lemon or three. Nuke the lemon in the microwave oven for
30-40 seconds and let sit until barely warm before you puncture the shin else you
will get sprayed with hot lemon juice. Zapping a citrus fruit like this
breaks down the pulp and you get more juice.
(3) Honey. A lot. Enough to leave a fair size puddle in the bottom of the
