How realistic is this show? Is he really surviving on his own? How many of the camera men have a spare Zippo lighter and Slim Jims in their pockets. I really question the realism of the show. It is very entertaining though.

I love this show ! As far as realistic goes ... He is more showing people the things they can do to survive if in the places/situations he puts himself in . The disclaimer at the start of the show says that some things are just for demostration .
Have you ever watched Survivorman ?? He doesn't have a film crew with him it's just him .

I hate hate hate this show!

Ive read accounts of his crew helping him out, as well as other survival experts ripping the stuff he does to shreds. That and Im really not a fan of the guy as a host. Just think the show falls short in realism.

The guy has admited that:
  • In the Everglades episode, Bear admits that the crew helped him build his shelter.
  • In the Iceland episode, Bear admits that the dead sheep was left by a local farmer so that he could use it for a demonstration.
  • In the Mexico episode, Bear admits that he used climbing equipment during a climb, and that the trout he caught was placed there by the crew.
  • In the Scotland episode, Bear admits that the rabbit was placed there by the crew.
  • In the Sierra Nevada episode, Bear admits that the crew helped him build a raft.
  • In the Alaska episode, Bear admits that a crewman caught the salmon he ate as well as having the boat which rescues him at the end as being 'sent' to pick him up.
  • In the Australia episode, Bear says that he did not spend the night out in the thunderstorm.
  • In the Australia episode, Bear DOES eat the python.
And who knows what else they are not willing to tell.

Survivorman to me blows Man vs Wild out of the water
That guy goes out without a crew, and has to drag 4-5 cameras along. It really makes ya think when he's got crazy, artistic shots, cus you know that he hasta go back from them. The host, Les Stroud goes for 7 days into alll sorts of environments, including a life raft. True he has a sat. phone in case of an emergency, but like he said, in the Amazon, good luck getting rescue if a snake bites you or a panther is following you (which actually happened to him)

I'll have to try and catch Surviverman. That sounds much better. I spoke with a buddy in the Air Force who teaches survival tactics to pilots, in case they crash or are downed in battle. He said that Man vs Wild is the biggest joke he's ever scene. He told me some of the stuff he's eaten. WHOA!! I'll stick w/steak and pork chops.

Is Man vs Wild the one where he drank his own urine in the desert?

Ive heard similar... he 'fell' in some freezing water at one point and the first think he did was strip naked. Now Im not personally sure, but Ive read some stuff from a lady who is a survival expert and she said when she fell through ice, the last thing she would have done would be to strip down, commenting on how bogus the guy from Man vs Wild's advice is.

It's also nice that he always has a "water-proof" backpack w/him.
