There is a second Shannara series that is a prequal set:
The Heritage of Shannara
The Scions of Shannara
The Druid of Shannara
The Elf Queen of Shannara
The Talismans of Shannara
The First King of Shannara
Ah, thank you! *Scribbles down titles so that next time she's at her will-be father-in-law's house, she can steal the books*

I want to read that one. I have heard it is wonderful. Nothing like a good book that you cannot put down. I'll have to make that my next purchase. I haven't seen the movie yet either.
If you have any sort of fascination with Japanese culture, particularily the geisha, it is an excellent book to pick up. Also, if you are at all interesting in feudal Japan, I would suggest picking up The Tale of Murasaki by Liza Dalby. The book is in the style of a memoir or an autobiography, and is about Murasaki Shikibu, the famous author of The Tale of Genji and her life. Another great read.

I just finished A Feast for Crows by George R. R. Martin. It is an excellent series-- You might like it. The first book is A Game of Thrones. It takes him forever to get the next book out though--I am patiently waiting at the moment
You know, I've had that particular author mentioned to me before, and I think perhaps even that same book. I'll have to write that one down as well.

Are you a fan of Mercedes Lackey or Anne McCaffrey at all?

Oh yeah, and I fixed this for you, but wanted to make sure to tell you how to correct it yourself next time. When you're quoting someone, the tag is like this (without the spacing, obviously): [ quote=username ] quoted text... blah blah blah... [ /quote ]

Yes. I love the Pern series! I have read som of Lackey's (I think it was the Oathbreaker series) It has been a long time. Was one of my first finds in the fantasy section of the bookstore. She actually first started those characters in an anthology that Marion Zimmer Bradley edited "Sword and Sorceress". I don't know how many there are, use to be one put out ever year before Mrs. Bradley died. (somewhere in the neighborhood of XVI). Found a lot of good authors through that set of short stories (Mercedes Lackey, Jennifer Roberson, Diana Paxton).
I think I have a few years on you. I have been reading their stuff for 20 years now
And thankyou for fixing my earlier post--and for telling me what to do. It is all real new to me, but I am a fast learner.

Yeah... I knew you were a bit older than me... since I knew Wise was a bit older. I'm twenty.

And as far as McCaffrey's stuff... Pern is great, but I actually prefer some of her other books.. such as those involving the Talents and also the Crystal Singers and The Ship Who Sang. Liked the Acorna books too.

And with Lackey... the Vows and Honor trilogy (Oathblood, Oathbreakers, and The Oathbound) is actually my favorite of hers. But then, I rather like all of her books, so...

My first real delve into fantasy novels was the Dragonlance series, and I have a few still, but I haven't picked them up in ages.

Let's see about a more recent author... have you heard of Elizabeth Kerner? She's only written three books so far (a trilogy), but they are wonderful. I still think her first one, Song in the Silence, is my favorite. In fact, it's pretty much my favorite book ever. The other two novels of the trilogy are called The Lesser Kindred and Redeeming the Lost.

Oh and on fixing the post... no worries... `tis my job to help out like that! And if you need any help with any of that, or just navigating around, feel free to ask me.

I'll have to check out the other titles my McCaffrey...been a long time since I read anything of hers. I'll look for Kerner too.

I really like Terry Goodkind. (though the last couple of installments were not as good as the first) David Eddings is one of my favorites too.

Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon will quit possibly always be my all time favorite. I never got into her sci/fi Darkover series, but I love her Avalon series and Firebrand was very good--about the Trojan war.

I've been reading the Vampire Hunter D series. I'm so glad it's finally been translated into English! Before the most recent D book came out, I read The Count of Monte Cristo.
Fantastic!

I'm currently reading Bushido: The Way of the Samurai, which is basically just an updated translation of the now fairly old Hagakure by Tsunetomo Yamamoto. Very interesting to see how this particular clan expected their samurai to behave.
