Still experimenting and just took this about 45 mins ago. Might have to get my tripod out or find something to rest the camera on. Had the shutter open for 4 seconds.

This shot is actually out in our back garden or yard as you lot call t.

That is a decent job for no tripod. 4 seconds is an eternity trying to hold perfectly still.
Can we comprimise with the word yarden?

My only problem was the pic is a lot better in the original form I think. 9 million pixels but was far too large to upload even in the gallery. Would you believe the pic you see is only 23% of original size? :

Not complaining at all I'm just happy to be experimenting all over again.

is there any benefit to having the shutter speed set for longer, I assumed the fastest setting would be best in all circumstances.

The longer you leave the shuter open the more light gets in. In order to use fast shutter speed on nightshot you'd inevitably need flash as well to pick up the non lit up subject(s).

slower shutter speeds are generaly for low light and faster speed shutter for daytime and action shots. you can't take a pic of a moving object with a slow shutter

So many variables with apertures and shuter speeds thats why its good to experiment unless you stick with Auto settings. I prefer manual but auto is good for quick unexpected shots.

so if I were taking a picture of a still object while using a tripod at night with no flash...theoretically the object would eventually be as visible to the camera as it is to the naked eye if the shutter were open long enough?
