Re: George Patton
That almost is like saying "The ends justifies the means" from Machiavelli's The Prince.
Just a more politcaly correct way of saying it. Patton was ruthless and thus victorious.

Not sure I agree. With the connection.
As for Patton being ruthless, there is little to argue.
I still contend that WWII's greatest leader at any level was Rommel.

Re: George Patton
That is why I use the word almost. I feel Patton cloaked the intent that he would
break rules of the Geneva convention if needed to pull out a win.
I can't argue about the Desert Fox

Rommel wasn't the greatest WWII General he lost . The Greatest General of WWII depends on what allied country you're from. In other words History and Great people are defined by the VICTORS because they are the ones who write the history

Well, why not? Oh wait.. I mean... uh...
America, 100% Honorable.
Seriously, I like the quote, but I see what you mean. Might have been better said by Rommel, eh? THAT was a man of genius and honor.

This is so ... I can't even....

Re: George Patton
He was a genius, he made the Brits and Americans look foolish. I he had the supplies
he needed he would have lasted a lot longer, maybe even held northern Africa til the
of the war.
I see your point Jade. It was taught in history in Austria that the Germans just spread
themselves out and their supply lines were horrible at the end thus they were easily
over run by a well supplied Allied force. I personally believe that A couple of German
Generals were better strategists than Patton or MacArthur.

Re: George Patton
Well had the Greeks and the rest of the Spartans lost the war then they would have been "DICKS", but since they won the war they wrote the history. Besides you can't compare Leonidas to Rommel. Rommel was a great General for the duration of a war. Leonidas was one for only one battle and wasn't really that great at that. I mean come on how hard is it to figure out you put 300 in narrow confines like the Hells Gate and the numbers of the Persians meant little, add to the fact you have first class warriors like the Spartans. I'm not saying Leonidas and the 300 didn't fight with courage and honor. But Rommel and Leo are in two different catergories. Just my O2 worth

It took two divisions of Brits to drive Irwin out of Africa - and he only had 35 Tanks left!!!
He not only pushed the Brits out of Egypt for a bit with on Division, he routinely ignored orders from Hitler to kill Jews. He just pretended he didn't get it. Period. At the age of 62 (I think) he was strafed by a Brit Fighter and still lived to see the attempt on Hitler, unfortunately, fail. He proposed very early pulling back and simply letting the Americans take Berlin for Germany's sake. And early on he surrounded, single handedly then Entire British Expeditionary Force in France and was in position to destroy them - This move alone could have changed the war for Germany, but Hitler threatened him and gave the order to pull back.

Leonides and the Spartans used terrain and training and for a long duration stopped a superior force.
Rommel, equally out numbered used the desert to wreak havoc among the Allies for years.
Rommel was so powerful a force in fact that several special operations were attempted to assassinate him by Allies. British and American Generals alike felt that his very existence was a threat as their troops spoke often more about 'the Desert Fox' than anything else.
Rommel was so great a General that even Hitler was unwilling to have him hung when he was implicated in the Assassination Conspiracy.
Now... If you base all of your beliefs on the words of Conquerors... Well... not much I can say then, eh?
