Default Ka-Ching!

With all the threads that point to American (and really all peoples) over consumption I kept thinking abou this song by Shania Twain. Really kind of hits the tone in my opinion. Try to imagine, honestly, if we all just used less, ALL the potential benefits. One of the biggest would be instant financial freedom for many of us. Our financial dependence is really often just in our own minds. We are slaves to our desires, not our wages, often.

Ka-Ching! by Shania Twain

We live in a greedy little world--
That teaches every little boy and girl
To earn as much as they can possibly--
Then turn around and
Spend it foolishly
Weve created us a credit card mess
We spend the money we dont possess
Our religion is to go and blow it all
So its shoppin every sunday at the mall

All we ever want is more
A lot more than we had before
So take me to the nearest store

[chorus:]
Can you hear it ring
It makes you wanna sing
Its such a beautiful thing--ka-ching!
Lots of diamond rings
The happiness it brings
Youll live like a king
With lots of money and things

When youre broke go and get a loan
Take out another mortgage on your home
Consolidate so you can afford
To go and spend some more when
You get bored

All we ever want is more
A lot more than we had before
So take me to the nearest store

[repeat chorus]

Lets swing
Dig deeper in your pocket
Oh, yeah, ha
Come on I know youve got it
Dig deeper in your wallet
Oh

All we ever want is more
A lot more than we had before
So take me to the nearest store

[repeat chorus]

Can you hear it ring
It makes you wanna sing
Youll live like a king
With lots of money and things
Ka-ching!

Sums it well G. Everybody trying to keep up withe "Jones" & the ever spiralling technology. No sooner do we buy things & its obsolete so people got to have the latest.

I've personally try to instill in my kids about the benefits of buying only what you need. Sure have a few luxuries just don't over indulge.

Bugs me to see young people today with the attitude of "live for today to hell with tomorrow"

It will take a major shakeup to educate our new generations of the dangers of greed as thats what it is really.

I think most people understand the dangers but that little man in their head says "I want. I want, I want," a bit of mind over matter, purely psychological.

Why do we have to keep up with the "Jones"? Kids see their friends with "Adidas trainers costing Â.£160 so they got to have a pair cos they are "cool" & " everybody's wearing them. I'd rather thet bought a pair that was comfortable & will fit the requirements of their need not what other people think of them.

So we have two so called sins of society which are GREED & VANITY.

There are other "sins" of the mind which I'll not digress on in order to leave scope for other members to broach the subjects.

I'll put another tuppence worth in later & I'll expect some change.

I think that your why question is pretty simple to answer. Good Ol' American Style Capitalism is to blame. Their tool is of course advertising. We are constantly being bombarded with images suggesting we need more or better. Simple economics. If we all bought the shoes we needed, the shoe companies would be very comfortable. However, if we all buy those fancy Nike and Adidas, then the shoe companies become disgustingly rich.

Thanks for the input, Sp00k.

My pleasure G, I'm sure there will be more replies to this especially those who are concerned about wasting hard earned cash. Never seen the point in buying something for the sake of it. The novelty soon wears off as well as the bank balance.

I try to teach my kids to spend wisely .. I can proudly say I don't own a credit card and the only major debt I have is my boys braces I can't say I don't blow a bit more money than I should at times or the occasional splurge on an luxury item or something fun . Being frugal is not a bad thing . I work in a big department store so I catch all the good sales 75% off - my discount is usually a great buy and my kids can keep up with their friends without me going broke, at the same time teaching them how to look for a bargain
Seriously , I worry about what we are doing to the planet with all this consumption . Can't be a good thing

Capitalism at its best I guess

I have three cards, but I never keep a balance...thats just crazy for the rates. I use them instead of cash, don't feel safe with cash living in the middle of the city.

well, i agree that the world aint what it used to be in our parents time, and is far removed from our grandparents lifestyles also, but in a consumer driven society, it would take a huge effort on everybodies behalf to change things, and short of another depression, i dont see things getting any better any time soon. House prices aint gonna go down, so mortgages are gonna be the main expense in most new households for those that can afford to buy. Petrol??? well let's not go there either

more importantly...G listens to country music???
